How to start a pool service business
A plain checklist: licensing, insurance, test kits and chemicals, pricing a route and finding the first pools — without the income promises.
Who it suits
Pool service is route work: the same pools every week, paid every month. It suits someone organised who likes being outdoors and can stay on top of water chemistry. In northern states the season is short, so openings and closings carry much of the year.
1.Decide what you will do
Weekly cleaning and chemicals, equipment repair, and seasonal openings and closings are different kinds of work, and in some states they need different licences.
Residential pools are the usual start. Commercial pools — hotels, apartments, HOAs — usually expect a Certified Pool Operator on the account.
2.Check the licence before you touch equipment
In several states chemical-only cleaning needs no contractor licence, but repairing pumps, filters and heaters does. Florida draws the line that way, and California licenses pool maintenance and repair under its own classifications.
Check your state contractor board and your county before you quote a repair, and register the business with your city or county.
3.Insurance
General liability covers damage on a customer’s property. Ask about cover for chemical handling and storage, and commercial auto if chemicals ride in your vehicle.
If you hire, workers’ compensation is required in most states.
4.Equipment and chemicals
A reliable test kit, telescopic pole, brushes, leaf rake, vacuum head and hose, and safe storage for chlorine and acid in your vehicle.
Open an account with a pool supply house early. Chemical cost is the line that moves most from month to month.
5.Price a route, not a visit
Most pool service is a monthly rate for weekly visits. Decide whether chemicals are included or billed on top, and write it on the quote.
Time your first stops including the drive. A route that looks full but zig-zags across town can lose money at a fair price per pool.
6.Find your first pools
Claim a free Fixerlane listing so homeowners searching for pool cleaning nearby can find and message you.
Some people start by buying an existing route. If you do, ask for the stop list, how long each customer has stayed and what they pay, and check it before you agree.
7.Book openings and closings early
In colder states, closings are booked from late summer and openings from late winter. Group them by area so a crew does more in a day.
The trade in numbers

Common questions
- Do I need a licence to clean pools?
- It depends on the state and the work. Chemical-only cleaning often needs no contractor licence, while equipment repair usually does. Check your state contractor board before your first repair job.
- How much does it cost to start a pool service business?
- We do not publish a figure. Test kits, tools, chemicals, insurance and registration vary by state and by what you already own. Price each one locally before you commit.
- Should I buy a pool route?
- It can give you income from day one, but you are paying for customers who may leave. Check the stop list, how long accounts have stayed and how tight the route is before agreeing.
- How do I get my first pool customers?
- A free listing where homeowners already search, neighbours of the pools you already clean, and reviews from every early customer.
- How much do pool techs earn?
- We do not promise earnings, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a separate figure for pool technicians.
